11TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
REFLECT & PRAY
A Word from Fr Danny:
It is striking that when Christ summons the twelve disciples, He does not begin with encouragement. He gives them authority and power over unclean spirits and over every kind of disease. Then He commands them, “Proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is at hand; cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons.” All of this takes place before the Last Supper, before the Cross, before the Resurrection.
But did they actually do it? In the Gospel of Matthew, we are shown something sobering. Faced with a possessed boy, the disciples fail. They cannot cast out the demon. They ask Christ, “Why were we unable to cast it out?” His answer is direct: “Because you have little faith.”
That should stop us. If we call ourselves Christians and this does not challenge us, if we do not experience our faith as alive and active, then we should ask: do I truly believe? If the answer is uncertain, we must ask God to increase our faith. The Apostles were sent before the Cross; we live after it. The graces of the Cross are given to us, especially in the sacraments, to offer us real help. Faith is not an idea. It must be lived in prayer, in reverent Communion, in honest Confession, in patience, in resisting sin, and in turning to God for help.
- Fr Danny
