Questions for the Week:

FIRST READING: EZEKIEL 47:1-2,8-9,12

The prophet Ezekiel envisions a future of restoration and renewal for the exiled Israelites held captive in Babylon. What future do you hope for with your family?

SECOND READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 3:9-11,16-17

Paul tells us that as believers in Christ, the Spirit dwells in us, making us holy, the temple of God. Can you share a time when you felt the Holy Spirit active in your life?

GOSPEL: JOHN 2:13-22

The disciples understood the full meaning of Jesus’ cleansing of the temple only after his resurrection from the dead. What has hindsight taught you about your life?

A Word from Fr Danny:

For the Jewish people, the Temple was the centre of the world and the meeting point of the divine and the human. Whether approaching Jerusalem from the north or the south, you are always going up to Jerusalem and the Temple. Graves face Jerusalem, and graves in Jerusalem face the Temple.

If Our Lord was so passionate about protecting the integrity of the place of worship for his Jewish people—the Temple—it must be that places of worship are not only necessary, but that they also need to be authentic in what they offer. Otherwise, they run the real risk of distorting the hearts and minds of those called to worship, and in doing so, misrepresenting God and diminishing the mystery of our relationship with Him.

And of course, there is an added dimension to our worship. Yes, we enter into a Church every time we come to Mass, but then He enters into us during Holy Communion. Are we the temple, or is He the Temple?
