COMMEMORATION OF ALL SOULS
Questions for the Week:
FIRST READING: ISAIAH 25:6-9
God promises a day of joy and renewal—ending sorrow, defeating death, and gathering all people to a banquet of salvation and hope.
Where do I most need to trust God to turn sorrow into joy and bring life from loss?
SECOND READING: ROMANS 5:1-11
God showed His love through Christ’s death while we were still sinners, reconciling us to Himself and filling us with hope and trust in His grace.
How does knowing Christ loves me, even in my sin, deepen my trust and hope in God’s mercy today?
GOSPEL: LUKE 7:11-17
Moved by mercy and compassion, Jesus restores the widow's son to life.
When have I experienced or witnessed God bringing new life or hope into a situation that seemed beyond saving?
A Word from Fr Danny:
The weeping widow in the Gospel had already mourned her husband and was now weeping for her only son. In this month dedicated to the Holy Souls, we can see in this woman a figure of the Church, weeping for the souls of the faithful departed — not as those who have no hope, but as one who does all she can to express our desire that those who have died may be made fully alive in Christ in heaven.
In the Gospel passage, it is her tears that move the heart of Christ to restore her son to life, rather than merely the presence of the body. It is a truth of our faith that those who are undergoing purification in Purgatory cannot do anything to help themselves; yet it is also true that our prayers can aid them and hasten their journey to the joys of heaven.
