20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Questions for the Week:
FIRST READING: JEREMIAH 38:4-6,8-10
One of the court officials, Ebed-Melech, pleaded for Jeremiah to be rescued from a muddy cistern. How might you help a friend or colleague this week?
SECOND READING: HEBREWS 12:1-4
The author of Hebrews encourages his community to focus on Jesus as a way to stay strong and hopeful. Can you think of a time when your faith in Jesus helped you through a challenging circumstance?
GOSPEL: LUKE 12:49-53
Jesus forewarns his disciples that even families will be divided over his words. Growing up, how did your family deal with tension and conflict?

A Word from Fr Danny:
How should we receive the words of Christ: “Do you suppose that I am here to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division”? A tension-free stability is not necessarily God’s will. Christ makes clear that His coming brings a choice that will divide—globally, between people, and even within our own hearts.
Our Lord also says, “There is a baptism I must still receive.” This is the Cross, which is the source of that division. At first, the opposing sides may seem alike. Both thieves beside Jesus were criminals, yet one turned to Him in faith and entered paradise, while the other rejected Him.
We must not be timid in following Christ. He warns us that loyalty to Him may disrupt comfort and relationships. This is not failure but the cost of discipleship. We are called to choose Him over empty stability, trusting that lasting peace is found only through the Cross.
