Questions for the Week:

FIRST READING: ACTS 2:1-11

The disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and able to speak in multiple tongues so that all the people could understand them. When do you feel the Holy Spirit present in your life?

SECOND READING: ROMANS 8:8-17

St Paul tells us that everyone moved by the Spirit is a son or daughter of God. How does the Holy Spirit bear witness in your life? Is your response one of fear? Or does it move you to cry out “Abba, Father”?

GOSPEL: JOHN 14:15-16,23-26

The resurrected Jesus sent out the disciples to forgive (or retain) sins. What has been your experience of the sacrament of Reconciliation?

A Word from Fr Danny:

The miracle of Pentecost is not that many languages were spoken, but that those who spoke them had no natural ability to do so — and yet, through this, the marvels of God were proclaimed. The Holy Spirit appeared not as a dove, as at the Lord’s Baptism, but as tongues of fire. Why?

A tongue of fire touches the head, transforms the mind, and empowers speech — turning something natural into something radically new. This is what the Holy Spirit wants to do with us: to take our small gifts and transform them to proclaim God’s greatness.

Perhaps the Spirit adapts to us, revealing himself in ways that meet our needs. We don’t need to look only for doves or tongues of fire. Instead, let us pray and remain open — ready to receive the Spirit, however he chooses to move in our lives.

- Fr Danny
