32ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

REFLECT & PRAY

A Word from Fr Alliston:

During this month of November, the church remembers to pray for the souls in Purgatory. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. The Church gives the name purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned” (CCC 1030–1)

The sufferings undergone in purgatory is not because we have a vindictive God who seeks to get even with us; but one of a Healer who not only wishes to undo the damage caused due to sin but to transform us into the image of Christ, his Son. Hence, it is not a second chance to get to Heaven but for being purified from anything that is not becoming of us as children of God.

Scriptural texts highlight praying for the dead such as: "Therefore Judas Maccabeus made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin" (2 Maccabees 12:45). From the beginning the Church has honoured the memory of the dead and offered prayers for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead.

Let us then remember to pray often for the departed souls that they enjoy the eternal bliss of our Heavenly Father… Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

- Fr Alliston
