ALL SAINTS DAY

REFLECT & PRAY

A Word from Fr Alliston:

We have Feast days and Memorials for various named saints in the annual liturgical calendar. But there is still an innumerable list of holy men and women as St John describes in the vision he has in the Book of Revelation (First Reading). November 1st then is the day dedicated to acknowledge also such unnamed  holy men and women.

They are what we term “communion of saints” and part of the Church Triumphant. They are there to encourage us on our earthly journey.  As one finds in the case of St Ignatius who while recuperating from a gunshot wound to his leg, reads from the Life of Saints which was influential for him to take the path of religious life and founded the Society of Jesus. They are also there to present our petitions to the Lord. Hence, we do not worship them (Latria), something due to God alone rather we venerate (Dulia) them and ask for their help.

We remember them at Mass. For instance, when the priest prays from the  2nd Eucharistic prayer with these words: “With all the Saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life”

The Saints have appropriated the work of Jesus’ redemptive act in their lives. They strove to serve the lord living in some manner the Beatitudes (todays Gospel reading) and thus inspire us not so much to copy them but in our own way to respond to graces God pours fit into our lives too.

- Fr Alliston

WEDNESDAY FAITH FORMATION SESSION | 7.30PM CHAPEL TAUPŌ

The First Friday Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is rooted in the apparitions of Our Lord to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 17th century. Jesus appeared to her and asked that the faithful receive Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays of the month in a spirit of reparation for sins committed against His Sacred Heart.

St John Paul II stated that the essential elements of devotion to the Sacred Heart belong in a permanent fashion to the spirituality of the Church throughout her history; for since the beginning, the Church has looked to the heart of Christ pierced on the Cross. In his 4th and last encyclical, Dilexit Nos Pope Francis reflected on this devotion which he felt was much needed for our present times too.

To help prepare for the coming First Friday of this month you are invited to reflect on this papal document with Fr Alliston this Wednesday, 7:30pm

On the first Sunday of each month, we gather after 9am Mass to pray for the protection of human life in New Zealand.Abortion is widespread (17, 775 in 2025) and euthanasia is part of our law. We believe we cannot be silent. Every human life is sacred and worthy of protection.

For 13 years, our parish has faithfully offered this prayer, asking the Lord to change hearts, guide our leaders and renew respect for life in our nation. We would love you to join us.

ABORTION.
BABIES CAN LIVE WITHOUT IT.

The Keys of the Kingdom: A young priest, Father Chisholm is sent to China to establish a Catholic parish among the non-Christian Chinese. While his boyhood friend, also a priest, flourishes in his calling as a priest in a more Christian area of the world, Father Chisholm struggles. He encounters hostility, isolation, disease, poverty and a variety of set backs which humble him, but make him more determined than ever to succeed. Over the span of many years he gains acceptance and a growing congregation among the Chinese, through his quiet determination, understanding and patience.

Titled Discerning our nation’s future through a Gospel lens, the document encourages Catholics and people of good will to consider voting as a moral and civic responsibility, not just a matter of personal preference. The bishops invite people to consider how they will cast their votes by reviewing candidates' and parties' positions across a range of key issues, and they also encourage people to pray for the country.
