THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

REFLECT & PRAY

A Word from Fr Danny:

Today we hear the famous John 3:16: “God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son.” Where else do we hear the language of a parent giving their son? This language is most often used in relation to military service, or perhaps to the priesthood, all with the implicit understanding that sacrifice is part of the giving.

So even here the language of giving and love, one feels, looks forward to the cross. It implies a certain vulnerability in God’s gift of the Son. In John’s Gospel we also hear, at the moment of Jesus’ death, the words: “It is accomplished.” Then, bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.

It is as if the Son, having fully revealed the love of the Father on the cross, now returns the gift of himself to the Father. The gift given and received takes our redeemed humanity to the Father in a love given, received, and perfectly fulfilled.

The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are so completely one that we name this mystery with a word not explicitly found in Scripture, yet faithful to its revelation: the Trinity.

Questions for the Week:

FIRST READING: EXODUS 34:4-6,8-9

We hear how God proclaims His name as “Lord” to Moses on Mount Sinai, describing Himself as merciful, gracious, kind, and faithful. How would you describe your experience of God?

SECOND READING: 2 CORINTHIANS 13:11-13

Paul speaks of the grace, love, and fellowship of our triune God and encourages the Corinthians to treat each other likewise. Who needs your love and fellowship this week?

GOSPEL: JOHN 3:16-18

Could God have saved the world another way? What does the sending of the Son reveal about the necessity of the Trinity?

THIS WEEK….

UPCOMING

On the first Sunday of each month, we gather after 9am Mass to pray for the protection of human life in New Zealand. Abortion is widespread (17, 775 in 2025) and euthanasia is part of our law. We believe we cannot be silent. Every human life is sacred and worthy of protection.

For 13 years, our parish has faithfully offered this prayer, asking the Lord to change hears, guide our leaders and renew respect for life in our nation. We would love you to join us.

ABORTION. BABIES CAN LIVE WITHOUT IT.

The Reluctant Saint (1962) is a biographical comedy-drama that tells the true story of Giuseppe Desa, a 17th-century Italian peasant who was widely considered slow and clumsy, yet defied all expectations to become a priest, performing miraculous acts of levitation and eventually achieving sainthood.
