6TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Questions for the Week:

FIRST READING: ECCLESIASTICUS 15:16-21

Sirach speaks of the human freedom to choose between good and evil and of God’s desire for us to act justly. What good could you do this week for a friend or family member?

SECOND READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 2:6-10

Paul teaches that God reveals His wisdom to us through the Holy Spirit. How might you be more open to listening to the Holy Spirit in your daily life?

GOSPEL: MATTHEW 5:17-37

Jesus offers stern warnings against breaking the commandments, holding grudges, committing adultery, divorcing your spouse, and falsifying oaths. Why do you think Jesus holds us to such high moral expectations?

A Word from Fr Danny:

We may be tempted to think that Our Lord came to move beyond the Law, that he was not concerned with commandments or rule keeping. Yet in the heart of the Sermon on the Mount he gives his most sustained teaching on the relationship between the Gospel, his Good News, and the Law itself.

“Do not imagine that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete them… not one dot, not one little stroke, shall disappear from the Law until its purpose is achieved.”

Later, at the Last Supper, Christ gives us another unexpected teaching on the Law when he gives “a new commandment: love one another; just as I have loved you, you also must love one another.”

Does this destroy love and the freedom on which it is based? No. Our Lord does not diminish justice; he elevates it. On the Cross he draws it up into love, into charity, and reveals its fullest expression.

The Law finds its fulfilment not by lowering its demands, but by elevating our hearts. What the Law commands, grace makes possible. In Christ, the command to love becomes both obligation and gift.

RETREATS

Pilgrimage of Mercy | Women’s Retreat

Date/Time - Fri 29 May - Sun 31 May 5:00pm - 12:00pm

Being led by Grace to the River of Mercy

Come as you are; weary, wondering, or wide open. Journey with us into a sacred space of rest, reflection, and renewal.

Guided by Sr. Kat Stone (MGL Australia) and Retreat leader and coach Jen (Aust. Cert in leadership in Ministry), this Spirit-led retreat is an invitation to step away from the noise of life and walk gently toward the stillness of divine mercy.

Through prayer, silence, sacred conversation, and moments of still waters, you’ll be led – not by striving – but by grace, into the tender current of God’s healing presence.

This is a pilgrimage for the heart – a return to the mercy that was never withheld, only forgotten. You don’t need to earn it. You simply need to follow and allow God to minister to you.
