Questions for the Week:

FIRST READING: 2 SAMUEL 5:1-3

The people of Israel recognized that David was a natural leader, and with the Lord’s blessing anointed him king of Israel. What do you think makes someone a good leader?

SECOND READING: COLOSSIANS 1:12-20

Paul offers to the Colossians a beautiful piece of poetry reflecting on how Jesus reconciled all things in heaven and on earth. Can you share a time when you were reconciled with a family member or friend?

GOSPEL: LUKE 23:35-43

Jesus assured the repentant criminal crucified next to him that he would be with him in paradise. Who might you offer words of comfort to this week?

A Word from Fr Danny:

Christ the King is a glorious title for today’s Solemnity, but the coronation presented by the Church is Calvary, and the throne is the Cross. The contrast goes further: normally, a king would not speak with a commoner at a coronation. Yet here Our Lord goes further still and speaks with a convicted criminal, though perhaps, in Christ’s eyes, he is high indeed.

Scripture tells us that “Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,” and the good thief says to the other, “Have you no fear of God at all?” He then turns to our Lord and says, “Jesus, remember me.” While others present called Him “the Christ” or “the Chosen One” in a mocking way, he had the wisdom to address Him by the intimate name “Jesus.” This is true fear of the Lord and true wisdom: even in the midst of deep suffering and the consequences of personal sin, to call out to Christ with the intimate plea, “Jesus, remember me.” Are we that wise?
