Questions for the Week:

FIRST READING: NUMBERS 21:4-9

In their desert wanderings, the Israelites learned that repentance leads to healing. What needs healing in your life?

SECOND READING: PHILIPPIANS 2:6-11

Paul taught the Philippians that the humility and obedience of Jesus — even to the point of death by crucifixion — led to Jesus’ exaltation. When have you been challenged to be humble and obedient?

GOSPEL: JOHN 3:13-17

Jesus reveals to Nicodemus that his death on the cross would lead believers to eternal life and save the world. What have you been taught about the meaning of the cross?

A Word from Fr Danny:

On this Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, we hear: “No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven.” There is an idea in Catholic theology called Exitus and Reditus—meaning that all things come forth from God and that all things are ordered back to God. Christ exemplifies this in His birth, death, Resurrection, and Ascension. We are called to follow Him on this journey of life in faith. For us, we certainly come from God, as the Church teaches that our spiritual souls are created immediately—that is, directly by God. Yet our return to God is hindered by sin. We can therefore think of the Cross as the ladder of our return. St. Rose of Lima, quoted in the Catechism #618, said: “Apart from the Cross there is no other ladder by which we may get to heaven.” For this reason, it is a praiseworthy practice to have a crucifix prominently placed in our homes, where it can be honoured and exalted
