17TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Questions for the Week:
FIRST READING: GENESIS 18:20-32
Abraham questions God about how He passes judgment on people. What questions do you have for the Lord?
SECOND READING: COLOSSIANS 2:12-14
Paul teaches the believers in Colossae that through his cross and resurrection from the dead, Jesus united Jews and Gentiles by their shared faith in him. How does your faith in Jesus bring you closer to others?
GOSPEL: LUKE 11:1-13
Jesus encourages his disciples to be persistent and bold in praying to God. Can you think of a time when God answered a bold prayer from you?

A Word from Fr Danny:
Today we hear Luke’s version of the Our Father. It’s good to remember that the Our Father is our prayer, not Christ’s—after all, he could never pray, “forgive us our sins.”
If the Our Father is our prayer, then what is the prayer that Jesus prays to the Father? Surely it is the Cross—the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass—where Our Lord eternally offers himself to the Father.
And notice where the Our Father is placed in the Mass: it comes right after the great doxology, Through him, and with him, and in him, and just before we receive Holy Communion. It stands between Christ offering himself to the Father and our receiving that same Christ into ourselves.
In this way, Christ surrounds our Our Father. He is the one who gives our prayer its power, because without his command, we would never dare to call God “Our Father.”

How do we really reach young people? How do we work together in mission?
If you've ever wrestled with these questions, then you won't want to miss this.
We’re thrilled to welcome Deacon Bob Rice — professor of catechetics at Franciscan University of Steubenville and a global leader in Catholic youth ministry — for two unmissable events at the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 4th and 5th.
These are free events, but for catering and resource purposes please RSVP your interest at: tinyurl.com/bobricenz
Talk One: "Reaching Young People in Parishes and Ministries"
Monday 4 August | 6:00–9:00pm
For parish and ministry leaders, school leaders, and anyone passionate about the future of the Church.
We’ll begin with dinner at 6pm, and the talk will kick off at 7pm with some beverages — engaging, practical, and interactive, with time for Q&A. From staff, to seasoned leaders, to a new parishioner sitting in the pew on Sunday, if you care about young people and wonder how we invite them into faith and mission, this night is for you.
Talk Two: "United in Mission"
Tuesday 5 August | 9:00–11:00am

We’ll begin with Mass at 9am, followed by morning tea and an empowering session on what it really means to be united in one mission. He’ll share how a shared mission can bring clarity, collaboration, and renewed purpose to our parishes, schools, and diocesan ministries and how everyone shares in that mission.

New Zealander Burt Munro spent years perfecting his classic Indian motorcycle. The year is 1967, and Burt takes his machine to Utah's salt flats, where he attempts the impossible, using his dream bike to set a new world record for speed. Based on a true story, the record Munro set still has not been broken to this day.
