TRINITY SUNDAY

Jesus said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you. And know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.’

Matthew 28: 18-20

The tradition of dedicating the month of May to Mary, came about in the 13th century.

The link between Mary and the month of May became popular among the members of the Jesuit Order — by 1700 it had a firm hold among their students at the Roman College and a short time later it was publicly celebrated in the Gesu Church in Rome. From there it spread to the rest of the Church.

Each week in May, we will highlight one of the many titles of Mary.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help

The tradition of Our Mother of Perpetual Help is traced back to 1495. The icon depicting Our Lady of perpetual Help was stolen from a Cretan monastery by a wine merchant a few years after its creation. It was brought to the church of St. Matthew in Rome. For 300 years, it resided at the church, and even survived the church’s destruction by Napoleon’s army in 1798.

88 years later, Pope Pius IX gave the icon to the Redemptorist congregation at the Church of Saint Alphonsus, where it remains today.

LIVE THE LITURGY
Inspiration of the Week

We are children of God, and as His children God shares with us a magnificent inheritance: suffering that becomes glory, fear that becomes strength, death that becomes life. With this mighty gift in our hearts, let us go confidently into the world.

Once I was at a meeting with representatives of various religions. On a coffee break, a man from another religion mused to me: "You know, with all our differences, all religions are really about being good people." | lowered my cappuccino and said as warmly as I could, "That's not what mine's about." His quizzical look begged for clarification. "Mine is about plunging into the life of God," | said.

Just before Jesus ascends into heaven, he commands the eleven apostles, "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age." (Matthew 28:19-20).

The word "baptise" means, "to immerse in, to plunge into." It presupposes the use of water. But what does it mean to be immersed in God's name? In the Bible, God's name is identical to God Himself. So, to be baptised into water, using Jesus' formula, is to be plunged into the life of God. Said another way, it is to die with Jesus and rise with him as a member of his body.

THE TRINITY isn't a doctrine simply to accept and ponder. It's more like an ocean: a mystery into which we are baptized ... inserted, immersed, dunked, plunged. Baptism gives us power to live our lives as beloved children of God, patterned after Jesus himself, who is always with us, until the end of the ages. Hardly the same as being good people. Stranger, but much better.
