15TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
REFLECT & PRAY
A Word from Fr Danny:
Does it strike us as strange that the Lord says, “The reason I talk to them in parables is that they look without seeing and listen without hearing or understanding”? If nothing else, it tells us that Christ is deliberately saying something that He intends to be understood at different levels by different people. He is not speaking simply. The advantage is that He can communicate a great deal without speaking in a merely univocal way, but it also means that His words can be misunderstood. Clearly, however, Our Lord believes this is a risk worth taking.
Perhaps one reason He speaks like this is so that some people are not forced into a response before they are ready to receive it. Is it possible that His parables are like time bombs, set to go off only when people are ready to receive them? Maybe this is both a mercy of God and a real work of the Holy Spirit, making the meaning known to people when they are ready to receive it.
If this is the case, perhaps we can take the words of Isaiah, which Our Lord places before us in the Gospel, and turn them into our own prayer: “Lord, help me to hear with my ears, understand with my heart, be converted, and be healed by You.”
- Fr Danny
Questions for the Week:
FIRST READING: ISAIAH 55:10-11
Isaiah encourages us to trust in the reliability of God’s word and purposes. When do you find yourself trusting in the Lord?
SECOND READING: ROMANS 8:18-23
Paul places his hope in God’s promised future, when both people and creation itself will be freed from corruption and decay. Is there something you or your family have been hoping for lately?
GOSPEL: MATTHEW 13:1-23
Jesus teaches his disciples to be open (be “rich soil”) to the often mysterious meaning of the parables about the kingdom of Heaven. Are you someone who is open to new or different ideas?
